Dual restore to Bootcamp (Win 8.1) & New Retina MacBook Pro

Hi All,

I have an issue while trying to dual boot deploy to a new 13" Retina Mac. I am trying to deploy windows 8.1 on a 50/50 windows/mac partition. This works perfectly on an old 13" MBP machine and windows and Mac work fine after my deployment.

The issue I have is, when I deploy to a new retina machine the windows does not want to boot and will not work, and I receive the error message "You can't change the startup disk to the selected disk" - "The bless tool was unable to set the current boot disk"

I am able to restore the same image manually using Winclone Pro 5.0.2, but not through Deploy Studio which is working fine for the older generation machine as mentioned above.

Please help, I would love to solve this problem.

Re: Dual restore to Bootcamp (Win 8.1) & New Retina MacBook Pro

I have not looked into this deeply, but the newer Mac's (roughly since 2013) support UEFI boot for windows(supported versions).
So the basic booter files are placed on the (hidden) EFI partition.
DeployStudio workflows only supports the old-fashioned MBR emulation mode I think.
Most Mac's untill recently supported both MBR emulation mode, as wel as UEFI, so most will work with a deploystudio bootcamp restore workflow.
It seems recent mac's only support UEFI boot mode.

Maybe you can grab the EFI partition too and restore that?, but I am not sure if that would work.

Take a look on the EFI partition by typing  diskutil mount disk0s1
(disk0s1 is the default number for the EFI partition of your startup disk)
and check contents on both older and newer mac (with working bootcamp installation)

see post of androindep in http://www.deploystudio.com/Forums/viewtopic.php?id=7137 for more and better info.

Thanks,

Looking at it, most people believe that DS does not support the imaging currently. I can restore the image using Winclone as mentioned and will have to proceed down that route for now, but I hope they add this to future versions of DS.

Re: Dual restore to Bootcamp (Win 8.1) & New Retina MacBook Pro

so, is it impossibile to create an image backup of disk with osx and bootcamp without change EFI partition to MBR partition? is it also not a praticable way to create two image one for osx and one for bootcamp and restore theme?

--at lease DeployStudio cannot do it (it can only work with emulated MBR -EFI partiton tipes)

--not for UEFI style, use Winclone pro, wrap the windows software as a pkg to deploy

I would also love to know if any progress has been made on this? We seem unable to make dual-boot units for Apple 2015 models and newer...

Re: Dual restore to Bootcamp (Win 8.1) & New Retina MacBook Pro

I suggest to move to the method of deploying mac image, with WinClone package to run after deployment.
Works on any mac (since the installer will determine it needs UEFI or MBR boot type..)

(requires pro licence, but is worth the money) see https://www.twocanoes.com/winclone/support/deploy-boot-camp-as-a-package-using-winclone-pro-4

Re: Dual restore to Bootcamp (Win 8.1) & New Retina MacBook Pro

Nov 2016 update : since 1.7.4 DS can image and restore UEFI windows partitions (on supported Macs)
You have to match Mac to windows image, but it will work.
see my blog post: https://www.lai.nl/en/boot-camp-with-uefi-in-depth-and-deploystudio-can-do-that

WARNING!
Make sure you update the BootCamp drivers for your new MacBook Pro's Windows installation.
There is a bug in previous drivers that will blow the speakers.
