Local user is not created

I'm using DS to deploy a customized, modular image created with instaDMG (Mac OS X 10.8.4 with some additional software). DS server  is on 10.8.4 also, DS is version 1.6.2. My (simple) workflow is as follows: Restore image - new user form - configure, where "Create local users" and "Skip Apple Setup Assistant" are checked. The image restores fine, however, not matter what I try, I cannot get the user to be created, so I end up with no user on the machine. Didn't work with 1.6.0 and 1.6.1 either. I tried restoring to different computers, using different images, checking "Automate" or not, I eliminated all other steps from the workflow except for the three mentioned above, but to no avail.
Any ideas?

TIA, Tina

Re: Local user is not created

Check the /var/log/ds_finalize.log on the restored computer.

Re: Local user is not created

It's doing more or less nothing, just resetting the local KDC and disabling the iCloud setup. Nothing whatsoever in terms of user creation, not even an error:

ds_finalize.sh - v1.30 (Fri Aug 23 01:30:27 PDT 2013)
ds_finalize.sh - updating dyld shared caches...
ds_finalize.sh - running /usr/libexec/configureLocalKDC
ds_finalize.sh - Disabling iCloud and gestures preference panes auto-launch at first login.
ds_finalize.sh - Finalize script completed, system will automatically reboot.
ds_finalize.sh - end

Re: Local user is not created

Before rebooting the computer, you should find the script ds_add_local_users_main.sh in /etc/deploystudio/bin/.
If it's not there, check the runtime logs.
You may have another task resetting the /etc/deploystudio folder or the target volume of the reconfigure task may be wrong.

Re: Local user is not created

The script you mention is indeed missing. I have these scripts in /etc/deploystudion/bin:
ds_0001.sh
ds_finalize.sh
ds_install_packages_0001.sh
ds_install_packages_0002.sh
ds_install_packages_0003.sh

I had a look at the runtime log; I can't see anything that seems to be wrong, but then, I'm not entirely sure what I should be looking for. There is nothing in there about the script ds_add_local_users_main.sh, however.
What tasks could reset the /etc/deploystudio folder? I have a fairly simple workflow: Restore, user form, hostname form, install 3 packages, localization and, of course, conffigure, and a script to correct permissions on the Office folder (but this script came only later, user creation didn't work before I added that either).
I can post the log if that might help.

Edit: The target volume is the same as in the other tasks of the workflow: Previous task target

Re: Local user is not created

'previous task target'

that could be the problem, if the disk was called Mac, and the image restored in the previous task has the volume name MacHD,
the previous taks target is 'Mac' (and the volume is called 'MacHD') and the task will fail.

The other tasks work, it may depend on the order of your workflow.

try 'last restored volume'

Re: Local user is not created

Hm. I'll give it a try, though I don't think that this is the problem: I also have "rename computer" in the "Configure" step of my workflow, and this gets applied fine, it's just the creation of the user that fails.

Edit: No, didn't help.

Re: Local user is not created

I see, I guess you are right, the issue is somewhere else...

A wild guess:
Is the data for users and computer names aready in the Deploystudio database?
Maybe one is already there, and the other filled in with a form (you mention this in your post) and not stored or used correctly?
Check if the data is entered / stored correctly after running a workflow for the mac you test it on.
If you create users, while there is no user specified if will fail.......

Re: Local user is not created

For me, a "createhomedir -c USERNAME" fixed the problem.

Re: Local user is not created

But this will only create a home directory for an existing user, not a new user account?

Re: Local user is not created

I have now  tried nearly everything, but to no avail. I reinstalled the entire Deploystudio server (including reinstalling the OS), I created new netboot sets, new images to install, a new workflow that only consists of restore and create a new user.
I even located the ds_add_local_users_main.sh and ds_add_local_user.sh scripts and copied them (via USB stick) to the computer being restored before it restarts, but this didn't work either.
Well - at least I got an error when trying this, when usually I get just nothing, not even an error.

Please: Nobody has an idea what might be wrong? Is creating a new local user working for all of you, or does nobody but me use that?

I am having the same problem. Worked fine up until last upgrade. Any luck with this?

Re: Local user is not created

No, it is still not working. I'm now on version 1.6.12, new Netboot set with Yosemite, new installation image also Yosemite, new workflows, deleted all computers from the database... still nothing... well, actually it worked once or twice, all of a sudden, but I haven't been able to reproduce it. It stopped working as suddenly as it had started.

Re: Local user is not created

No, sorry, still not working
Well... I installed two new MacBooks Pro yesterday (brand new NetBoot and installation images), and it worked with them. And then... using the same new NetBoot image and the same new installation image on a Mac Mini - no user was created. Why not? No idea.

Upgraded the Deploystudio server to 10.10. Seems to be working now, I hope it stays that way...

Re: Local user is not created

i just did one last time on my workflow. i found that before i cleaned all the records in "computers" in Deploystudio Admin, and it didn't work.  then i tried installation for some mac, and it got some records in it, then the user creation worked in my workflow.
i don't know if its related, but i would like to do more tests to verify it.

Re: Local user is not created

Bringing up an old topic. This month, as always, we are preparing to re-image all our labs before the start of the fall academic semester. Our current method as of the past year or so is of the thin image approach. We use DeployStudio to put down a base OS. It's an OS that we installed on a prototype computer form a USB flash drive. Once installed, we don't even boot it up, we just suck it up with DeployStudio. We then image our labs with that image, currently being macOS 10.12.6. Added to the workflow are package and scripts to install our package deployment tool Munki.  Among other things we bind the workstations to our AD, rename computers, etc. Once Deploy Studio finishes the post installation work, Munki is kicked off automatically to install all programs, settings, and profiles to the computers.

The other part of the workflow we made use of was to have DeployStudio create a local hidden admin account. Last year it worked fine, and it's still working on my test computers. But with our first lab deployment this past Monday, the create accounts didn't work, leaving the computers with out any local administrative account.

After much messing around I found a not so elegant solution. On the prototype computer I stopped the DeployStudio process at the end before it could reboot. I then grabbed the files:

ds_add_local_user.sh
ds_add_local_users.sh
ds_add_local_users_main.sh

and copied them to the DeployStudio server in the Files folder. I then added a copy item to the workflow (three times, one for each file) to copy the files to: /private/etc/deploystudio/bin.
The finalized script will automatically run those scripts and properly setup the Administrator account.

The downside? The user name and password are in clear text in those files.

Our version of DeployStudio is 1.7.5 (b160915).

Re: Local user is not created

I don't have those scripts.  Is there a way you could post them.  How do people create users?  I have tried using CreateUserpkg, and it works great except for the password.  Has anyone got this to work using AutoDMG and High Sierra
