1.7.8 Bootable USB Does Not Work

Hi all,

I recently updated our DS server to version 1.7.8. The server upgrade seemed to go in fine, however now when I try to create a new bootable USB stick with Assistant, I've been totally unsuccessful. A few times Assistant failed almost instantly after starting the creation process. After a lot of troubleshooting, I found that my iMac for some reason had an inaccessible folder called DeployStudioRuntimeHD in /Volumes. After deleting that folder, I was able to successfully erase the flash drive (again), format as JHFS+ (GUID partition table), and then Assistant seemed to work and "successfully" created the bootable drive.

However, the stick still will not boot any target Mac. The target Mac will get about 50% through the grey Apple logo progress bar, then reboot on its own and come back to the login window. It never actually boots to the DS workflow selection. The stick that was created on the brand new iMac has the same problem if I try to use it to boot older Macs. When trying to boot the new iMac itself, I get the prohibitory symbol.

I've tried using another flash drive, running the Assistant on another machine (freshly unboxed iMac), with the same result. Has anyone else run into this issue?

Thanks for your help.

-Matt

Re: 1.7.8 Bootable USB Does Not Work

Just an update. I've tried a few other things - like using a known-good DS 1.7.4.1 USB stick with Assistant (withOUT formatting in Disk Util first); also tried downloading the Sierra 10.12.6 installer, created a DMG of it using AutoDMG, then used that DMG as the source in DS Assistant. Still same result - gets 50% through boot, then reboots itself and loads up to the login window.

I'm having the same problem with USB booting.

Created the USB image on 10.13 with 1.7.8. The progress bar gets to 80% (after like 15 mins) but never finishes.

Re: 1.7.8 Bootable USB Does Not Work

Another update. Rolling back to 1.7.6 restores functionality, however it has a very bizarre typing issue. While booted to the DS Workflow interface, certain keys type incorrect characters. For example, hitting M will actually produce ?, hitting Q will produce an A, but other keys work normally. Very odd, and tested the same across several known-good devices.

I tried updating to 1.7.7 to see if it would fix the typing issue, and unfortunately it has the same no-boot result as 1.7.8.
