Deploying winclone images hang on waiting for pigz with 10.11 NBI

I recently created a new NBI for new apple hardware. This NBI was created on OS X 10.11.1 (SIP Disabled) using DS 1.7.0
Any time I netboot to this NBI I'm unable to restore an winclone image. I've verified that the winclone images still restore on NBI's created on 10.10.5 and below.
Immediately after the restore starts the deploy studio runtime log sits on waiting for pigz.
I haven't changed my winclone images and I can see that pigz is in the winclone image.

Here is the system log

May you share the embedded extract/restore utilities of one of your winclone bundles?

I'm not sure exactly what you mean. Here are the files inside my winclone image. Is that what you're looking for?
BCD
boot.img.gz
boot.mbr
genericboot.mbr
gptrefresh
hiberfil.sys
ntfscat
ntfsclone
ntfscp
ntfsinfo
ntfsresize
partitionid
pigz
size
winclone_helper_tool

Thanks.
May you zip these files (only the executable ones) and email it to debug@deploystudio.com ?

I've tried to send it to debug@deploystudio.com from two different addresses and its come back undeliverable. Is their another address I can send it to?

SamT have you heard anything back?  I'm having the same issue.  My Mac OS images deploy fine, but I cannot get a winclone one to restore.

I haven't heard back on a solution. I did get confirmation the files were received so hopefully it will be soon.

Re: Deploying winclone images hang on waiting for pigz with 10.11 NBI

The ntfs utilities embedded in the Winclone bundle are crashing when executed from a OS X 10.11 recovery base system.

Re: Deploying winclone images hang on waiting for pigz with 10.11 NBI

I had contacted the people over at winclone about this and sent them the install.log and the system.log. If you have any logs on your end that show the crashing I'd be happy to send them along to the people at winclone to see if theres anything they can change.

Re: Deploying winclone images hang on waiting for pigz with 10.11 NBI

I'm experiencing the same issue and noticed this in /var/log/system.log:
kernel[0]: proc 453:: load code signature error 4 for file "winclone_helper_tool"

I was also getting taskgated errors reporting no signature for pid=447 whenever running the winclone_helper_tool manually. Disabling taskgated with launchctl stopped that log entry but the script still hangs on "Waiting for pigz".

Re: Deploying winclone images hang on waiting for pigz with 10.11 NBI

After some more research it looks like the pigz program doesn't run in the recovery console so when winclone_helper_tool launches it nothing happens and it just waits. Since pigz uses parallel processing is it possible that there is something missing from the NetBoot set DS creates that it normally relies on?

Re: Deploying winclone images hang on waiting for pigz with 10.11 NBI

FYI, I posted in the Winclone forums and received a response that the self extracting archives are deprecated:
https://twocanoes.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/205301166-Restoring-Image-with-Deploy-Studio

Since Winclone also uses ntfsclone would it be possible to create a script that uses the boot.img.gz file it created directly?

Re: Deploying winclone images hang on waiting for pigz with 10.11 NBI

winclone mentioned to me trying package deployment. I had limited success with it. For one I couldn't get it to work at all if deploy studio installed the package when net booted. Ideally this is where it'd be done so we could still use the DS name database to name the machine. With some work I was able to get it to boot if I installed the package on first boot. I then had to install the winclone application, choose the partition and select make EFI bootable. They said this could be fixed by setting the text in C:\Windows\System32\license.rtf to be Windows 10. I haven't tried this as we're in the middle of a large printer deployment that has put this project on hold. If this does work I still need to figure out how to name the windows side.

Re: Deploying winclone images hang on waiting for pigz with 10.11 NBI

Hi,

I'm also on the same boat with the error. Did this just recently happened? I upgraded DS in December to 1.7.1 and ever since i did that I haven't been able to Image a system that requires a windows partition. Is it possible to drop the winclone image that i've created without having to use DS? Or how else would i be able to image using my current winclone image? Any help would be appreciate it.

Thanks in advance!!!

Re: Deploying winclone images hang on waiting for pigz with 10.11 NBI

The issue occurs when you're booted to a netboot set thats been created on a 10.11 OS. If you create a netboot image on a machine running 10.10.3 you won't have the issue (this is assuming the machines you're trying to image don't require 10.11) I believe you can convert your winclone image to a package using the winclone application and then add it to deploy studio. Set it to install on first boot and it should partition it, and install Windows. The auto computer naming won't work, but I believe everything else will.

After spending a lot of time on this issue I have finally cobbled together a solution. I documented the procedure I developed here:

Re: Deploying winclone images hang on waiting for pigz with 10.11 NBI

This is awesome. I was planning on doing something similar when I had the time, but you've already done all the hard work. Thank you very much! I will be testing this in our environment soon.

Re: Deploying winclone images hang on waiting for pigz with 10.11 NBI

Twocanoes tech support asked me to test adding libz to the Netboot set which would allow pigz to run. What is the best way to add that to the environment? They also said that in the next release they will include an option to use unzip instead, although there will be a performance hit if you use it.

Re: Deploying winclone images hang on waiting for pigz with 10.11 NBI

I'm having the same issue, but right now I can not test it, DS is not working but in the meantime got information from winclone support, If you havent fixed yet, try it this:

The Winclone compression uses pigz, which relies on specific libraries that may not be part of your netboot file system by default. To view the dependencies from a system where Winclone Pro is installed, open Terminal and enter:

otool -L /Applications/Winclone.app/Contents/Resources/pigz

The output will show the dependencies:

/usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib (compatibility version 1.0.0, current version 159.1.0)
/usr/lib/libz.1.dylib (compatibility version 1.0.0, current version 1.2.5)

Booted from a netboot system, check in /usr/lib/ for the libz file and add to the system if they are missing. Then try again.

Re: Deploying winclone images hang on waiting for pigz with 10.11 NBI

I should mention that I raised this issue with Winclone support as well. They didn't say that they _don't_ support doing restores from DeployStudio, but recommended that I use the package installer instead. Since I had a number of labs to upgrade to Windows 10, that's what I did, and now I deploy the Winclone image using Munki.

Any update from winclone on this issue. It happens with their pkg image as well. We tried getting support but it does not sound like they really know.

Re: Deploying winclone images hang on waiting for pigz with 10.11 NBI

I have found this:

http://macappstore.org/pigz/

I am going to install Pigz on my Deploy Studio Server, recreate my master boot set
and then try to restore a Winclone Image
