Future of DeployStudio??

It seems that Apple has been increasingly moving away from imaging toward profile control and AppStore downloads.

We DO still think that imaging makes a lot of sense. But DeployStudio is NOT an open source project.

This raises obvious concerns, what if any, assurances might you be able to offer that it will not soon be "End of Life"?

And, please, if you might ever be going to EOL DeployStudio, could you at least offer us assurances that it will be made open source at that time?

Re: Future of DeployStudio??

DeployStudio hasn't been updated in over a year.  Im disappointed.

Any chance that you can share your product roadmap or tentative plan for the short term future?

Re: Future of DeployStudio??

My personal observations:
DeployStudio is updated periodically. The last release was just a couple of days ago.
If you're talking about documentation, well, yeah. Old.

Open Source does not guarantee product longevity, or timely updates. You ARE welcome to donate cash to the developers though. ;)

Apple doesn't share their product roadmaps, or tentative plans for the short term future. Even if they did share that with developers, disclosure would be a breach of their agreement, intentional or otherwise.
That makes it tough for developers to make any statements about their roadmaps/plans.
Historically, the DeployStudio team has been pretty terrific about maintaining their product. They just need a documentation specialist. :D

Re: Future of DeployStudio??

Don't get me wrong. I do very STRONGLY LIKE Deploy Studio. That is why I am concerned. And yes, I have donated. Though your point is well taken, maybe we all should do so again.

You are correct that Open Source doesn't guarantee what we want. But it does at least open the possibility that if the DS development team were to get reassigned, that some school, etc. might be able to take it over. The difference in effort between keeping a great product running, and creating a great product from scratch, is huge.

Your documentation point is a very good one. Should they get reassigned to other tasks, besides making the code open source, it would be real nice to have the forums continue. There is a lot of great information in the forums that does not exist elsewhere. (at least not that I am aware of.)

Re: Future of DeployStudio??

I agree on the open source. DeployStudio is the only non-apple tool I use that is not open source.

It's a win win situation, especially if it's decided to be EOL. There are many admins that would love to help work on this tool, myself included.

Re: Future of DeployStudio??

I just did make a donation. And urge others to do so as well.

Having said that, it would be nice to know that the code won't disappear should some corporate decisions change, etc.

Re: Future of DeployStudio??

I recommend that DeployStudio becomes a paid product, that way we can at least have a tenable position from which to complain.

In all my time of using DeployStudio, none of my employers want to donate funds as their thinking is 'why pay if it's free'. These are the same people who regularly pay $$$$$$ for other software that doesn't get used even 1% as much as we do DeployStudio, and also allow staff to PAY for malware like MacKeeper, despite our protestations in IT.

I reckon that making DeployStudio a paid product would be win-win for everyone.

Re: Future of DeployStudio??

There already are commercial products and from what I understand, some of them are quite good too. What is "special" about DeployStudio is that it is free.

For some of us with limited budgets, this is a very big deal.

There are also those IT departments, that won't spend a dime supporting Macs, so they would never pay for a solution. But they would then use "difficult" deployment as an excuse to buy fewer Macs.

Re: Future of DeployStudio??

A paid option would be attractive for us. A site license for < $5000/yr would be easy for us to justify assuming that it includes a semi-reasonable amount of support and/or some other advantage that would allow us to justify it without it looking like us donating money.

Re: Future of DeployStudio??

And what would be the problem with doing both?

There are some open source projects for which either the developer or some other third party charge for support. If it were to go that route, my preference would be something like the source is readily available for free. But compiled binaries and support require a fee.

Re: Future of DeployStudio??

Unless special exceptions were made for Not-For-Profit organizations, we would have to quit using it, were it to go commercial.

Re: Future of DeployStudio??

Actually, the more that I think about it, the more I worry about anything short of Open Source.

We don't know who is behind Deploy Studio. Who knows but one morning some executive will decide to kill it. Or just move all the developers to some other project.

It really doesn't matter if it is profitable. Lots of companies have killed profitable products. Apple for example, has been known to do this on a whim.

Open source doesn't guarantee that anyone will volunteer to take over. But closed source would make that even harder.

Re: Future of DeployStudio??

Is there really a future? Or is DS already a dead project?

I really do like DS. But, as "flammable" noted, "admin and Genius Bar haven't posted to the forums since late August..."
http://www.deploystudio.com/Forums/viewtopic.php?id=7443

This is a very different behavior from the frequent nightly builds, when we started using DS. Given the new OS, one would expect that there'd be at least something official to give us the "warm and fuzzies."

If DS were open source, then I'd be less worried.

Re: Future of DeployStudio??

Hopefully it is not. As a maybe very early user from first versions of deploystudio we indeed saw frequent updates, but as rc stopped and 1.x versions started deploystudio became better and better, so i suppose no need for lots of nightly builds.
I really hope that we will see a new 10.11.x compatible version...
DS as opensource would be an option... or simply put as alternative an opensource version aside the freeware (from deploystudio developped version)....

Re: Future of DeployStudio??

There is a place in France that has a training session up for using DeployStudio with El Capitan slated for mid-November.  While it may be wishful thinking, I don't think they'd continue selling training on a dead technology.

Re: Future of DeployStudio??

@jimkirk: you mean this course? http://www.agnosys.fr/redirect-ssdds.php.
To me this seems a case where all training courses did find " Yosemite" replace "El Capitan" and did not check all details.
My place (see profile) is delivering DeployStudio training too, and we are hoping as everybody that soon there will be a 10.11 ready version of DeployStudio.
I do not know anything more than what everybody can read on forums.
+1 for open sourcing DS

Re: Future of DeployStudio??

As for the future of DS and new Mac versions. If there's no definitive word from the developers on a new version soon then I'll have to abandon DS. If I do then I'm not coming back.

For the developers is the issue lack of donations that's holding up on releasing new versions? I can't make any promises on making one but I can't justify making one at this point either.

I suspect many are actively looking for other processes so lack of information will see more and more of us jump ship for other solutions.

Re: Future of DeployStudio??

I blame Apple. They make too many changes between versions that just seem to break applications like Deploy Studio. The yearly releases also make it hard to program for. Finally get Deploy Studio working then new release, over and over again. I wish they would just start doing it like Windows 10 and just do incremental updates. It might help with issues like this. Some developers seem to be able to keep up, twocanoes (winclone) we use to support the uefi now, had to create own bootpicker and then had to update that again for uefi (too cheap to pay for a screen that gets you into an OS even though twocanoes does offer bootrunner). For imaging starting to use Parallels Mac Management but it still has a long ways to go, but they keep it updated with el capitan support very quickly after release.

Hi guys,

sorry but this time we couldn't make it for day 0.
We'll post a nightly build as soon as we have something stable.

Hi,

How do we go about getting access to the nightly builds to test this out? We appreciate all of the development done with Deploystudio.

Many Thanks
