Self Service feature like Casper Suite

Been using DS for a while and love it, mostly cause it's free.

Saw a Casper Suite demo the other day, and it looks better than DS however costs a bucketload, even for education prices.

One feature I really liked was the Self Service option, could a similar setup be integrated into DS?

Re: Self Service feature like Casper Suite

I agree. I've been wondering about how to do this lately. The runtime application is pretty much what I would need. I would supply packages to users by putting them in groups. It would be wicked simple for me, but the issue lies in the runtime app.

The only reason I'm not using it right now is because it asks for admin passwords. Last time I used it, it asked for the password twice. The first auth request is for the system.privilege.admin and the second is for system.privilege.setgid_appkit.

I've read about editing /etc/authorization before: http://www.afp548.com/article.php?story=20041027093216241
I'm wondering if something could be done to allow the runtime app to run as admin without authorization.

Anyone doing anything like that, have any thoughts on doing it, or suggestions on what I really shouldn't do to /etc/auth?

I'd also like to see the Runtime app install without the DS suite. A separate installer would be good.

Thanks!
Rusty

Re: Self Service feature like Casper Suite

Thanks Spider, we updated the rc123 installer to make the runtime not prompting for an admin password.

Bump on this topic...

I am running rc128, new mac shop, and would love to deploy the Runtime.app ONLY to users for a self-serve repo. Is it possible yet to deploy only the Runtime.app? Does anyone know what I would have to include to make a Runtime-only app, using something like Iceberg or Packagemaker?

I've been using Runtime as a self service app for a few months now, works great.

Just install the whole thing then use WGM to not allow the other DS apps to launch.

Put a shortcut to the Actual Runtime.app in the Applications folder also.

Located here:  /Applications/Utilities/DeployStudio\ Admin.app/Contents/Resources/Runtime.app

Also add this to the dock using WGM

We've included a Runtime only package installer in the NB110807.
